Surrendering & Rescueing

If you are surrendering your ferret or have rescued a ferret, please call the GCFA Shelter at 708.442.8650 to arrange a drop off time or an emergency rescue pickup. Please note that the GCFA shelter is run entirely by volunteers and we are not staffed 24 hours a day. Some days, there is only one volunteer at the shelter and they are already spending their time taking care of the 100+ ferrets at the shelter. Considering such, we appreciate your patience as you wait our response as we attend to each request in turn as we would prefer to assist you with your surrender when there is more than one volunteer so we can take the time to learn as much as we can about your ferret for its continued health and care.

When you call in to surrender a ferret, the GCFA Shelter staff will ask you a variety questions about you and your ferret. Here are some of the questions that you may be asked:

*What does your ferret eat?

*How old is your ferret?

*Has the ferret been vaccinated?

*Are you aware of any current medical issues?

*Who is your ferret's vet?

*Does your ferret get along with other ferrets or other household pets?

*Why are you surrendering your ferret?

Remember, when you call for your appointment to surrender your ferret, describe what ferret items you have that you no longer need and the volunteer will be able to suggest what the shelter can use. Your ferret is not a donation - please consider providing a monetary donation to assist in covering the cost of the shelter providing medical care, housing, food, water and litter for your ferret.

If you are interested in donating unwanted ferret items, please note that Ferret Nation cages are the only cages the GCFA Shelter will consider taking as we are not in need of other cage brands so please do not bring them to the shelter as we have no room to store them. Considering putting them on Craigslist for others who are in need of cages.

As for donating other items, the GCFA Shelter does not take open medication, laxatone, ferretone, linatone or the like. If you have questions about donating items, please visit our Donations page or call the GCFA Shelter at 708.442.8650
